Daybreak season 1, episode 5 recap: Homecoming Redux or My So Called Stunt Double Life
By Wade Wainio
In episode 5 of Netflix series Daybreak, Wesley Fists has to make a decision: Assassinate Josh or risk the lives of everyone!
Episode 4 of Daybreak finally revealed the identity of Baron Triumph (Matthew Broderick) as Glendale High’s Principal, Michael Burr. Also, The Witch (Krysta Rodriguez) got a makeover from Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind). This episode focuses way more on Wesley Fists (Austin Crute), and the character’s journey is substantially narrated by RZA.
The story focuses a lot on Wesley’s pre-apocalypse relationship with Turbo “Bro Jock” Pokaski (Cody Kearsley). In the present, Josh and crew are planning a homecoming dance. While it’s a minor issue that loud music annoys The Witch, the bigger problem is that Turbo wants Wesley to kill Josh (Colin Ford), They wear headphones to avoid activating The Witch’s witchiness, and also to avoid attracting Ghoulies. However, Wesley has a big dilemma on his hands.
In a flashback, Wesley reveals that Turbo also hated Wesley’s cousin, Emmett (Frederick Williams). In the present, Wesley visits the imprisoned Baron Triumph, who wants Wesley to set him free. However, he admits that he ate Emmett. When Wesley returns, he locks the ever-untrustworthy Eli Cardashyan (Gregory Kasyan) outside with music cranked to attract Ghoulies. Eli tried to electrocute Josh.

However, Wesley himself is considering Turbo’s ultimatum of either killing Josh or having everyone at the mall potentially die. If he is to assassinate Josh, he decides that it must be quick, painless and untraceable. Separately, Mona Lisa (Jeanté Godlock) chides Turbo for hooking up with Wesley. Meanwhile, Angelica is trying to set Josh up with KJ (Chelsea Zhang), which becomes a minor point of the episode (but a bigger element to the next one).
The man with the poisoned crown
Wesley decides to utilize mutant spider venom in the crown given to Josh, who is supposed to win the “gender-neutral homecoming royalty” contest. As the dance occurs, Josh dances with a mop version of Samaira “Sam” Dean (Sophie Simnett), which is perhaps a sad and beautiful moment for Daybreak. It’s also revealed that Sam knew the relationship between Wesley and Turbo.
Of course, Turbo’s group also has a dance but plans to interrupt the one at the mall. It also becomes clear that Turbo killed people for being nice to Wesley, due to an intense jealousy. In any case, Wesley wins the dance pageant instead of Josh, and Wesley urges no one to touch the crown. Turbo eventually enters. However, Wesley had already crafted a plan to replace everyone with mannequins when the lights go out.
