Medical Police season 1, episode 3 recap: Dumb Doggy
Lola and Owen search for the creator of the virus in no fewer than three continents on Medical Police. Who is paying for all these trips anyway?
Lola and Owen go to New Hampshire to visit Lola’s old mentor, Dr. Richard Waters (Fred Melamed) on Medical Police. Before she went into pediatrics, Lola’s specialty was virology and she hopes Dr. Waters can help identify the pathogen. Within the virus itself is a section of the lipid envelope that has been cut and upon closer inspection bears the signature of the virus’s designer: MRN for Matteo Roberto Neri.
Rumor has it that Neri accidentally infected himself with one of his own viruses. He checked himself into a hospital in Florence, Italy 20 years ago but there’s no record of him ever checking out. Lola and Owen head to Florence to get a look at his medical records to see if they can track him down. Dr. Waters warns them to be careful because you know what happened to the last two doctors who went searching for a bioterrorist. Owen says he’s never heard of them, to which Dr. Waters replies knowingly, “Exactly.”
Owen breaks into the Florence hospital using an old cop trick with scotch tape on a window. But wait, he just keeps scotch tape in his pocket? Like, he’s had it the whole time, all the way back to when they jumped out of the plane? Okay. Once inside they steal a key card and sneak into the records room. They find Neri’s file, but a guard outside discovers their signs of entry and pulls the alarm.

As they rush to an exit, Lola reads the file and discovers that Neri needs daily injections of a highly experimental and outlawed drug in order to stay alive. If they can find who gives him the drugs, they can find Neri. Lola and Owen find an upper floor window right under a truck with a mattress in it. Perfect! They jump into the truck just before the guards can apprehend them, but they both totally miss the mattress and hit the ground unconscious.
The guards assume that they’re both dead and turn back inside. But Lola and Owen both come to, crying and shambling in terrible pain. They limp their way to the street and hail a cab to the airport. There’s one place where Neri can get the treatment he needs and it’s in Africa. Meanwhile Tran, the henchwoman, is just steps behind them as she investigates the break-in at the hospital. Lola left some of Neri’s file behind in her escape and now Tran knows how to track them.
Director Patten is having trouble of his own keeping the outbreaks contained, including pressure from Senator Barney (Kimberly Hébert Gregory) to give her assurances he has this under control. Patten tells her that this kind of outbreak is exactly why he requested more funding at the last budget meeting. Senator Barney promises her full support at the next budget meeting if he can get this attack under control. Sounds like motive to organize a bioterror attack to me, but who knows.
Lola and Owen arrive at the clinic in Sudan where Neri (John Kapelos) is holed up. As he receives his morning infusion of drugs (which has made his flesh soft and weak over the years), Neri watches the news and bemoans his obscurity. The virus is his masterpiece and no one knows that he’s responsible.
Someone calls Neri and warns him that two American agents are on their way to apprehend him. He begins making an exit plan as Lola and Owen scheme how to get to Neri. This place is a clinic and they are doctors, so it only makes sense to go in and pretend to be interior decorators who are old friends of Neri’s. Somehow, this works and the director of the clinic shows them around and bring them to see Neri.
Meanwhile, Neri switches places with a guy named Hanzi that looks a bit like him. He slips right past Lola and Owen, but before they can go after him they are knocked down by Neri’s bodyguard Lorenzo. Before Lorenzo can do much more, he is knocked down by Tran, who then intends to kill Lola and Owen. Before she can get far, though, Lorenzo gets back up and the two bodyguards are locked in a fight. Lola and Owen slip past them and go after Neri. Tran shoots Lorenzo, but then Tran gets knocked out by Hanzi.
Lola and Owen catch up with Neri, but he doesn’t have the cure because he didn’t design the virus, he only followed the blueprints given to him. Before they can get more answers out of him, a truck comes to pick him up and he hops in the back. Lola and Owen grab his legs while Neri clings to the truck. His poor soft flesh cannot handle it and he literally gets torn in half. Lola and Owen have his bottom half and his top half falls out of the truck a few yards away.
Lola and Owen are disgusted, particularly by the wet sound it made when he came apart. Owen checks the bottom half’s pockets and finds Neri’s cell phone, but it is locked with face ID. Before they can use Neri’s face to unlock it, a dog comes around the corner and bites his face off. Luckily, Neri has a twin, as evidenced by an old photo found in his wallet. Lola and Owen must find Neri’s twin to unlock the phone and hopefully find the next clue toward finding the cure.
