The end is nigh as Mr. Robot prepares to close out its final season.

Mr. Robot is just a handful of episodes away from the end. And so much has happened in just the last couple of episodes that I’m still trying to make sense of it all. Has Elliot actually pulled off what the past three seasons have been building up to? Has everything taken place the way he actually imagined?

After the Deus Group hack, this episode begins with a devastated Dom recovering at the hospital. As she watches the news about the hack, she soon finds out that she is being investigated. Basically, she’s SOL at this point because there’s nowhere she can go–not even to her family.

So she takes matters into her own hands and leaves the hospital only to barricade herself inside of her apartment. Who better to show up to convince Dom to run away at this point? Darlene, of course!

At this point, it’s pretty obvious that Dom has very limited options and running away with someone she’s been in bed with doesn’t seem like a horrible idea. Thus begins Dom and Darlene’s escape together which leads them to a motel where we get a rather emotional Mr. Robot moment.

Darlene must say goodbye to Elliot now, and while she asks him to join her and Darlene, he insists there are things left to do. Of course, there is! This is Elliot we’re talking about. He needs to deal with whatever Whiterose’s machine is, and he has to do it on his own.

We’ve always been headed this way, haven’t we? Elliot has always been a lone ranger and it seems fitting that he would be doing this on his own. The story has always been about him, and it will end with him.

Saying goodbye to Elliot, however, was just the start of Darlene’s adventures as she goes back to her room to find Leon there. You all remember Leon, don’t you? The secret Dark Army agent that was in prison with Elliot. Anyway, he joins Darlene and Dom as they make their way to Boston.

My favorite part of this Mr. Robot episode comes soon after they all head out together and relax for a bit at a rest stop. Darlene and Dom sit down for a moment as Darlene takes out her phone–and sends out all the money from the Deus Group hack to everyone’s E-Coin accounts. It’s a hauntingly beautiful scene because of what’s been sacrificed and lost to get to that moment. Its beauty is in the excitement of all the people around them celebrating the hefty deposit into their accounts.

As Dom and Darlene arrive at the airport, Dom runs into Irving…the Dark Army guy! It’s a scary moment, at least temporarily, because we’re not sure if Dom and Darlene should make a run for it. But according to Irving, the Dark Army has lost interest in them. I don’t know why she’s so convinced that he’s telling the truth, but it’s enough to convince her not to go on the trip.

She doesn’t board the plane with Darlene, but it’s not long after the doubt settles in. Meanwhile, Darlene is freaking out because she doesn’t know how to be alone, it’s something she’s never wanted to do. Alas, this love story may never have been in their destiny because what happens next, is very unlike Mr. Robot (at least the romance of it all).

Darlene decides she will board the plane, just as Darlene’s panic attack causes her to run out of the plane and into the bathroom. They just miss one another–and all seems to be okay. One hell of a love story, isn’t it?
