Mr. Robot has us seeing double with the series penultimate episode.

Mr. Robot is going to go down as the series that gave us one hell of a final season. Every episode thus far has been better than the last, and this one just takes the lead by miles. So, the hack has taken place, people have money in their eCoin accounts–but what about Elliot?

The episode rewinds back a little bit to the moment where Darlene and Elliot are saying bye, but this time around we’re seeing it from Darlene’s point of view. As I said in my last recap, it’s such a beautiful moment between the two siblings. They’ve done some heavy stuff together, and parting ways in this manner hits you right in the heart.

We know what happens to Darlene after she and Elliot say farewell to one another, but luckily, this episode fills in the gaps as to Elliot’s whereabouts. And trust me when I say, it gets trippy. He heads back to his hometown of Washington Township sans Mr. Robot to destroy Whiterose’s timey wimey machine.

He manages to sort of do…something? That is until the Dark Army shows up and takes him away. What happens next really sets the tone for the remaining time we have left of the episode. Watching the interaction between Whiterose and Elliot was absolutely riveting. There’s so much angst, trauma, agony, and sadness embedded within each of them.

But let the feelings be as they may, it was too late for Elliot to stop Whiterose from doing anything. The malware didn’t get uploaded in time, and Whiterose’s machine had already begun to do what it was meant to do.

Before we know it, madness ensues as Whiterose shoots herself and things begin collapsing around them. And yet, Elliot won’t budge from his place and instead decides that Whiterose left him with a means to override whatever was about to happen.

There’s a lot of confusion at this moment as we aren’t entirely sure if Elliot was successful or not. The sound effects certainly didn’t make us feel like it, but then he wakes up in his apartment. But something is very different. It’s not the apartment we know, and he seems different.

And that’s because he is. This version of Elliot cleans up well, has a job, and is getting married to Angela. What exactly did that explosion do? Are we in the Mr. Robot multiverse?

Even Elliot’s dad is alive in this reality, and things seem absolutely perfect between them. It’s all very jarring because a happy Elliot is not the one we’re used to. And clearly, this Elliot knows something is wrong because he feels it in his gut throughout the episode.

And it turns out his instincts were just right as he comes back home at the end of the day–to the Elliot we know sitting inside his apartment. So. trippy. WHAT?!
