HBO’s Westworld has announced the release date for the highly anticipated and secretive third season.

HBO’s Westworld is set to return on March 15, 2020 at 9 PM for the series’ eight-episode third season. Westworld, created by Christopher Nolan and Lisa Joy and based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name, returns with main cast Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Simon Quarterman, and Rodrigo Santoro. In addition to our returning favorites, season three has added Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher Jr., and Michael and Tommy Flanagan to the cast.

Season two left off on somewhat of a cliffhanger, with Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard and Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores free from the confines of the park and at odds with one another. Various other hosts and humans have escaped the park to follow whatever destiny they choose. Meanwhile, Ed Harris’s the Man in Black finds himself confronting a host version of his daughter in what appears to be a distant future.

While details about season three have been kept to a minimum, Nolan has teased a “New World” theme for the season with inspirations taken from Blade Runner. At Comic-Con he said:

"“Dystopia can look pretty beautiful in the world. Just because the world is corrupt inside, doesn’t mean it can’t be smothered over and pretty. We wanted to find a version of dystopia that we hadn’t seen before.”"

Judging from the first teaser trailer for the new season – a sleek advertisement with sinister undertones selling a vague technology with the promise to make the world a better place – Nolan and Joy have achieved a vision of a dysfunctional utopia. It will be exciting to see what everyone’s role is in this new future, as well as who our new cast members turn out to be.

I am particularly interested in Vincent Cassel’s role. Word has it that he plays a villain, although I don’t expect Westworld will give us anything as straight-forward as good and evil. Cassel has a reputation for bringing a sensuous charm to even his most nefarious roles, which I think will play perfectly in a series as morally complex and nuanced as Westworld.
