As Ares elders try to discover the connection between the suicides, Rosa makes some stunning discoveries about her family’s connection to Ares.

Rosa is interviewed by Ares elders about her experience during Hester’s suicide. She’s obviously the focus of a lot of speculation and gossip. Rosa seems worried that she’s going to be set up as a scapegoat for Hester’s death and she’ll get no help from Fleur, who will testify to anything that will implicate Rosa.

When Rosa confronts Fleur in the hall, a drip of bodily fluids from above reveals Borms suicide by hanging. Fleur, Borms’s sister, is horrified and devastated. Rosa sees Jacob creeping in the shadows, staring at her.

At this point, she decides to go back home to see her parents. But when she calls she doesn’t get any reply and when she gets home there’s no one there. When her father finally does come home, he tells her that as long as her new friends are more important than her family, she won’t be allowed to see her mother. That’s fair.

Rosa starts having visions. First, a woman silhouetted behind a sheet but with no one behind it, then chains behind pulled along the floor and the oil-slick creature that stalks her out on her balcony. One minute she’s backed up against the railing at night and the next moment it’s broad daylight and the creature is gone. It’s pretty jarring.

The doorbell rings and it’s Carmen coming to check on her. She says everyone was worried when Rosa disappeared after Borms’ suicide. Despite what Rosa’s father said, she and Carmen visit her mother at the hospital.

Rosa’s mother is happy to see her and says she’s doing better, but there are several pen sketches of black circles hanging on the wall behind her bed. What’s that all about? But then what Carmen introduces herself, Rosa’s mom freaks out. She knows Carmen’s father Maurits and it obviously has triggered some trauma. Carmen explains that they once had big plans together.

Rosa’s mom begs her not to go back and warns her that they keep something captive underneath Ares, something evil that eats you alive and drives you crazy. It’s called Beal and she shows Rosa her own mark of Ares. She used to be a member!
