Daybreak season 1, episode 8 recap: Post Mates
By Wade Wainio
In episode 8 of Netflix series Daybreak, Josh and Sam have some relationship troubles in a full-on flashback story.
Previously on Daybreak, Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and Ms. Crumble/The Witch (Krysta Rodriguez) auditioned for the Cheermazons. Also, The Witch remembered her warped relationship with Principal Burr (Matthew Broderick) before he became the cannibalistic Baron Triumph.
“Post Mates” begins a little more sanely with Ms. Crumble in a flashback, speaking to her class about the polymorphic qualities of the sunflower; It can be used as food and anti-inflammatory medicine. It is also a hyper-accumulator, capable of removing radiation from contaminated soil. After Principal Burr makes another announcement about peanut allergies, Josh Wheeler (Colin Ford) and Sam (Sophie Simnett) ditch class, smoke and make out.
We quickly learn some things, such as Josh being an annoyingly picky eater and they rely on a “consent app.” Josh’s mom calls, then texts, urging him to call his dad. He ignores her, wishing to focus on Sam instead. Being inexperienced, Josh has some intimacy issues, and he even accidentally bonks her face with his noggin.

Although they have some chit-chat about King Arthur and Guinevere, things break down when he asks how many people she’s slept with. After being offended at first, she does a flip-flop and starts trying to be sexier for him. This is when the Post Mates food delivery guy arrives with some Bazun Chet Jiao, among other things. Frankly, Sam gets a little creepy with him, in what is a classic strange Daybreak moment.
The fight
After Josh and Sam go swimming, Josh makes the mistake of telling Sam that he loves her too soon in the relationship. Sam gets a little confrontational about it, adding that she wishes Josh hadn’t posted the video that helped make her homecoming queen. She also laments how, after sex, Josh gets to be a “stud” while she’ll only be a “slut” (though Josh wasn’t really a sexual tyrannosaur anyway). She outright says she wants to be able to do what she wants with no consequences and that she’s not a “queen.” Basically, it’s all a jumbled mess.
Then Josh finally answers his mom’s call and he has to leave. His dad died while he was with Sam. Josh tells Sam to leave him alone, adding that, as a popular person, she has no idea what real people feel, such as pain and rejection. He says she’s a beautiful homecoming queen, has everything people want, and yet she’s still complaining. To finish the job, he says she’s a “slut,” which is exactly what she didn’t want to be called.
