What is the deal with Jamie and Nick’s friendship on The Sinner? We have no idea.

The Sinner remains the same weird, haunting shell of itself in the third season. But are we surprised? Nah, not at all. It’s what the show is known for and adding in Matt Bomer and Chris Messina into this setting makes that much weirder and better.

Is anyone else having a hard time envisioning Messina as anyone else than his The Mindy Project character Danny Castellano? Seeing him in his second serious role (Birds of Prey as Victor Zsasz) this year is getting weird, folks!

In any case, The Sinner dives a bit deeper into the dynamics of Jamie and Nick’s relationship with a series of flashbacks. We don’t know a whole lot about what their past was like, but there is something very odd about it. Were they lovers? Did they do something absolutely horrible and sinister? It sure feels like it.

One thing is for sure, they loved danger and they loved putting themselves in harm’s way–together. Refer to the scenes where Jamie puts a knife through Nick’s hand or when they’re literally standing on the edge of a building.

I love that we’re seeing a slightly different angle with Detective Ambrose this season. He’s been the only recurring character on The Sinner three seasons in, and this time around, he’s got his work cut out for him. The conversation he has with Jamie is of particular interest and speaks to what’s going on in Jamie’s head–sort of.

He clearly had some attachment to Nick, even though he knew he was bad for him. There was clearly some thrill there, which is why he literally gets off to thinking about Nick while having sex with his wife.

What exactly is he thinking about? Pain, hurt, and the adrenaline he felt with Nick by his side.

There is a lot of concern here about Jamie’s state of mind because it doesn’t seem like he’s always completely there. It’s almost like he’s in a fugue state, which is what I was thinking when he chokes a man at the hospital. What the what is going on?!

I applaud Messina for completely transforming himself for this role. He’s known for his comedy, and yet he’s presented such a dark, complicated character in The Sinner. He’s so believable as Nick, a conflicted individual full of dark secrets and torture.

At this point, Ambrose is the only one suspecting Jamie of foul play. He knows something is up with him, and he’s eager to find out exactly what’s going on. If you recall, the woman named Sonya complained that Jamie was on her property, and she wants something done about it. I’m calling it now, Sonya and Ambrose will be hooking up at some point this season.

The episode takes us to yet another weird place as Sonya finds a grave dug in her backyard. Did Jamie and Nick do this? And did these two go on murder sprees back in the day? Based on Jamie’s behavior during this The Sinner episode, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m so into the season, all thanks to Messina and Bomer. They make one heck of a scary, haunting team.
