Ambrose and Jamie have a night out in the town–and it’s pretty wild, The Sinner fans.

The Sinner is known for its cryptic and strange character arcs. This is why I was very thrilled at the prospect of Matt Bomer joining the series. He carries with him this allure and a dynamic that can be applied to any situation. But he thrives at being the type of character The Sinner needs–lost, confused, and at times, disturbed.

In “Part IV”, the episode opens to another flashback between Jamie and Nick. The mystery between these two friends, frenemies, enemies? is still hovering above our heads at this point in the season, and it’s becoming curious as to what they are to one another.

The scene quickly shifts from a semi-heated argument between the two to Jamie in the present. He’s sort of on the run from Ambrose, and as he shifts from one mode of transport to the other, Ambrose isn’t too far behind thanks to Detective Soto tracking Jamie.

More from Show Snob

Even though Jamie has gone into the city at this point, Ambrose is dead-set on following him to ensure he doesn’t do anything stupid. You know, like kill someone.

Hot on his trail, Jamie goes into an art gallery, where, lo and behold, he meets one of his past students–a cute, outgoing girl. Immediately, The Sinner viewers feel a pit in their stomach because this situation just can’t end well, right? The girl proceeds to take a selfie with him, flirts a little bit, and then manages to get his number in the process.

Ambrose eventually follows Jamie to the roof of a building where he’s standing right on the ledge. It’s something he and Nick once did, to feel the thrill of near-death, I guess.

Even though Jamie doesn’t jump off (thank goodness!), he runs away with Ambrose following closely behind. The guy is not going to give up that easily!

They end up at a bar where Ambrose tries to learn more about the weird game Nick and Jamie used to play. You know the one where you fold a piece of paper into the fortune teller triangle thing and then it has different options behind each fold? I’m sure you know what I’m talking about!

It is how Jamie and Nick decided upon Sonya, and according to Jamie, the fortune teller dictates all their decisions or did when Nick was alive. And I guess it was this sort of game that made Jamie feel Nick was incredibly honest, not afraid to take every part of a person in–good, bad, or really bad.

To prove his point, Jamie starts talking to some dudes at the bar, picks up women with them, and then heads back to a hotel room to continue the party. Amidst this partying, we get another flashback of Nick and Jamie digging up a hole. While Nick seems pretty darn comfortable, Jamie is clearly stressed out. But then it gets weirder when Nick says they are going to get a woman that lives up the road…and bring her to the hole they’ve dug up, for good?!

Whatever Jamie and Nick used to divulge into together has clearly escalated to killing people, something Jamie isn’t on board with. However, as The Sinner often does, we learn that Nick is much more complicated than we knew. Clearly, he has murdered people before, and now he wants Jamie to feel the same rush as he does.

Back in the present-day, Jamie starts talking about strange things, and it turns off the rest of the group who ask him and Harry to leave. For a brief moment, it feels like things got really intense when Jamie attacks one of the men and kills everyone. But don’t worry guys, that was just him imagining it. Totally normal…right?

The night could not end without a text from the past student Jamie had bumped into earlier in the episode. She invites him to a party, and while he’s there, he meets a psychic, who all but confirms that Nick is a spirit that lingers around Jamie. In fact, he’s “attached” to Jamie. Yikes. Even in death, he won’t go away!

Naturally, this freaks Jamie out, and he makes his escape from the party with his past student under the ruse of making a beer run. He manages to ditch Ambrose in the process, and then things get crazier.

Jamie proceeds to start speeding, to the point his past student starts flipping out. At this point, I thought they were going to surely crash and die. All the while, Ambrose is in pursuit to try and stop Jamie, and luckily, they both just nearly miss each other and stop.

Once again The Sinner flashes back to perhaps what we should consider a pivotal moment for Jamie. The car crash that takes Nick’s life is the scene, and in his final moments, Nick makes Jamie watch as he takes his final breaths. And before he is gone for good, he wants Jamie to take the fortune teller from his pocket and keep going.

Keep going with what?!

After this insane night, Ambrose drops Jamie off at home and then spends the night outside in his car. The next morning brings some breaking news as Ambrose learns that there was a death at the party they went to last night.

Guess who it was, folks?

The psychic.
