The Sinner places Jamie in a rather awkward predicament as he comes clean (sort of?).

The Sinner isn’t as exciting as it has been in seasons past, particularly the first season. I don’t think seasons 2 or 3 have matched up to the suspense and drama of that premiere season. But in any case, I love Matt Bomer, and seeing him as the conflicted, dark character we’ve seen him play in Jamie Burns is something he excels at.

This week’s episode is off to a slow yet intriguing start as Jamie is seen back at school (I don’t think he is supposed to be there), while Lela is at home talking to Ambrose. It was due time that Lela face the music–Jamie is a coldblooded murderer.

But it’s something Lela points out about Jamie that really has me scratching my head. He never gets mad, like ever. In fact, she tells Ambrose that she had an affair some years back and Jamie was contemplating what it was that he did wrong. So, clearly, there’s something off about the guy, and it shows given what we’ve seen thus far.

The Sinner gives us some early flashbacks to Nick and Jamie’s college days, as they were first becoming friends. Whoever they cast to play their younger selves look exactly like them. It’s eerie how alike they look to Matt Bomer and Chris Messina.

It’s evident that Jamie is drawn to Nick from the very first moment they met, and at the time, there was no way of knowing just how twisted things would get.

Their friendship continues to evolve and grow as we see during the episode, and along with it, the weirdness amplifies. It leads them to the edge of a cliff, literally, and from there we saw how Nick always pushed Jamie to the absolute limit of tolerance.

In the present, we begin to see a very strange side of Sonya, one that is obsessed with Jamie, apparently. She draws sketches of him and isn’t as scared as one should be of a guy that just walks into your house in the middle of the night. What does she do instead? Ask to take pictures of Jamie clothed…and then naked.

Not sure what that was all about, The Sinner.

The next morning, Jamie meets with Lela and confesses to the Brooklyn murder. It is a ballsy confession but it was about time he admitted it. It was only a matter of time. But Lela isn’t ready to forgive or accept her murderous husband, understandably.

Jamie’s erratic behavior continues as he shows up at school when he’s not supposed to and then ends up having to take care of Emma when she has a seizure after an Adderall overdose. Oh, and then he is by her hospital bed, which Emma’s mother is livid about it.

If you thought that it was the end of Jamie’s strange behavior, you thought wrong. He shows up at the school fundraiser and Lela and her brother are irked to see Jamie show up there. It turns into quite the verbal and semi-physical fight until Jamie is escorted out of there. And then he proceeds to lose his cool in the stairwell and starts screaming like a banshee. Way to go, Bomer, for that incredible performance.

Unfortunately for Jamie, Detective Soto sees his freakout, and it’s not looking too great for him.

The Sinner took me for an unexpected spin as it came to a close this week. Jamie and Ambrose meet up, head to the woods, and Jamie pulls a Nick on Ambrose with his emotional manipulation. Apparently, Nick and Jamie used to play some twisted, freaky game where they would bury each other alive for hours.

Uh yah, scary stuff, people.

For some reason, beyond my understanding, Ambrose decides to play along and lets Jamie bury him. The tradeoff is that Jamie will write a confession and bury it with Ambrose so if he doesn’t pull him out, then the cops will find Ambrose’s body and the letter.

Not sure I’d still go along with it, but that’s just me.

And I have a feeling as Ambrose comprehends what is going on, he is not going to be happy he decided to to do this.
