Iris and her friends cross a treacherous path full of empties while Felix and Huck are following close behind in The Walking Dead: World Beyond Episode 2.

Episode 2 of The Walking Dead: World Beyond begins with Hope having a nightmare of her mother’s death. The only item she has from that horrible day is a marble she keeps on a string around her neck.

The scene is followed by Iris attempting to kill her first empty.

As she struggles we hear Felix’s training instructions detailing how to do that. To kill an empty, the brain needs to be destroyed, the easiest point of entry is the eye socket. While trying to kill an empty they need to keep a safe distance and aim for the legs to knock them down.

In her struggle, Iris falls down a ravine with the empty tumbling down with her. She appropriately vomits on it and the group continues through the town.

Felix and Huck are not far behind, trying to understand why Iris and Hope would leave and why their father would be sending messages without even identifying the Civic Republic as dangerous.

While Elton takes pictures he explains to Hope in a factual manner that he believes humans will be gone in 15 years. While it is a sad subject he accepts it and Hope does as well, at first.

The group then spots black smoke coming from what has been called The Blaze of Gory. It is known as an everlasting fire that draws empties in. The group will need to cross it if possible otherwise they will be going out of their way and lose time.

Before they move on Hope leaves behind a can of sliced peaches that Felix and Huck later find.

After they escape a horrific bee-filled empty they counter a red spray-painted empty that Silas was unable to kill with a wrench. The group finds solace overnight in a treehouse when the same red spray-painted empty finds them.

Silas feels guilty for not being able to kill the empty.

After failing to kill it with a bowling ball Hope had been carrying around they decide to play a game of Monopoly and wait to deal with the empty in the morning. Unable to sleep Hope leads the empty to a ravine and when she returns to the treehouse she asks that Silas not tell anyone what she did.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Episode 2 recap: Felix’s Flashbacks

Throughout the episode, audiences caught bits and pieces of Felix’s life before and leading to “The Night the Sky Fell.” It turns out the neighbourhood Iris and her friends were travelling through was where Felix once lived.

Felix was a hard-working young man who, upon admitting to his father he is a gay, was thrown out of his home. In tears, Felix still offers his father money as he had been supporting him.

Flash forwarding to “The Night the Sky Fell” Felix spent two days returning to his old home begging to see and help his parents. They, however, refuse to let him in.

As Huck sleeps Felix approaches his old home and can hear the growling and groans of empties inside. The next morning she asks him about where he went the night before and he briefly explains to her what had happened.

The Walking Dead World Beyond Episode 2 recap: The Blaze of Gory

Before the group attempts to cross the Blaze of Gory that Elton renames Blaze of Glory, he tells Hope that the endlings will be the very last one of a species.  Hope uses this as a way to boost morale instead of weakening it, and spray paints a message that Felix and Huck later find.

The group maneuvers through the smoke-filled area of abandoned school buses using the sun as their compass recalling Felix’s training. Moving east towards the fence they lose the sun temporarily in the smoke.

As empties are about to descend up them they make it through unscathed.

While they are all proud and relieved, their task isn’t over as more empties surround the area. Elton notices a tornado siren on a building not far away and suggests they used it to lure the empties away.

Iris however does not want anyone to go alone and believes they will find a way together. The episode ends as during the night Hope takes it upon herself to head towards the building hopefully to set off the alarm alone.
