The Flight Attendant & Ted Lasso earn Critics Choice Awards nominations

On Monday, the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards revealed its series nominees.

It’s almost time for the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards and on Monday, the complete list of nominees was finally unveiled with Netflix’s Ozark and The Crown leading the charge. Other series like Schitt’s Creek and Lovecraft Country also earned their fair share of nods.

The Mandalorian from Disney Plus also earned itself a few nominations, as did Better Call Saul and newcomer Perry Mason with star Matthew Rhys earning a Best Actor nod. There aren’t too many significant shakeups in this year’s batch of dramatic television nominees but I am happy to see Perry Mason and Lovecraft Country secured so many nominations.

What surprised me most was actually the comedy category where both The Flight Attendant and Ted Lasso earned nominations. As the two shows were among my favorite new series of 2020, I’m delighted to see them getting attention from the Critics Choice Awards. PEN15 is another charming comedy series I’m glad is getting some much-needed acclaim.

Overall, while the drama categories are all solid choices, the comedy selection this year is where we’re seeing a lot of diversity, newcomers, and dark horse candidates. Despite The Great getting snubbed by the Emmy’s, it did earn at least one nod here for Nicholas Hoult’s kooky portrayal of Peter III of Russia.

All that said, I think what is perhaps the most surprising nomination out of the entire bunch is Ashley Park’s nomination for Emily in Paris. I wasn’t impressed with the show as a whole, but Park was, by far, the most entertaining and watchable part of the first season so I’m happy to see her getting some notice!

On the flip side, I’m a little shocked to see that some Quibi series made the cut for this year’s Critics Choice Awards considering the service’s quick downward spiral after its lackluster launch and I wasn’t altogether impressed with the Mapleworth Murders.
