Things are about to get more magical in the world of Only Murders in the Building because another Doctor Who veteran has joined the cast.
According to Deadline, Peter Capaldi has joined the cast as a recurring guest star in the next season. The actor portrayed the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who and is the second official Doctor iteration to join Only Murders in the Building. The first was Jodie Whittaker, who was actually Capaldi’s successor on the show and the first woman ever to play the Doctor.
This is honestly such a fun addition and really adds to the cast already in place. There's already a ton of star power in season 6. We know some of the great actors that Capaldi will be acting with in the new season, including Nicola Coughlan, Simone Ashley, Jennifer Saunders, Kathryn Hunter, Martin Freeman, and many, many others.
The new cast members will join the cast that’s already set to return, including the core trio Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. We can also expect to see the recurring cast members who have appeared over the last five seasons, including Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, and more.
With cast announcements trickling in and Selena Gomez posting on Instagram about filming updates for season 6, it’s only a matter of time before we get some teases for what’s going to happen next.
However, there is a big change that’s happening despite all these fun new cast additions — and that’s the fact that season 6 will not be coming this summer whatsoever.
Why Only Murders in the Building season 6 will most likely be delayed
It would be pretty shocking if we got season 6 even in September. For the past five seasons, Only Murders in the Building has released a season each summer, typically in August or September, with new episodes premiering weekly. But filming schedules for those often ran between March and June. This time, filming began around May and June, according to Deadline. With that timeframe, it’ll be a while before we see the first episode.
Honestly, that’s not that surprising. A big reason filming was likely pushed back was a major location change for season 6. The cast and crew have moved to London for the story, which explains the abundance of British guest stars appearing in season 6.
This makes sense, as at the end of season 5, they discovered another murder, Cindy Canning. Somehow that is going to bring them across the pond. But if you’re worried that the culture change and the new guest stars are going to change that NYC feeling of the show, the creator, John Hoffman, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that it still feels like the same series regardless:
“The spirit of the show and the center of it and the emotional hook and how it feels, surprisingly, still feels like our show, and there isn’t a shift that takes us out too much. So that part is always the driving force, wherever the case takes them, whether it’s New York or some other place. I will happily report that London has been incredible for us.”
That being said, there’s no official confirmation of when Only Murders in the Building will come out, and honestly, no reason to believe that we might need to wait until 2027. We might get lucky, and it might just come a little later than September. There's nothing like a good murder mystery to celebrate Halloween.
