There are plenty of great sitcoms to watch and binge, but one I genuinely love is a little FX-on-Hulu series that's taken the world by storm.
Alright, maybe not the entire world, but my little world, and that’s Adults.
With two seasons, this series has single-handedly gotten me interested again in the classic sitcom of people living in the same house and making a mess of everything. But there’s something that happened at the very end of season 2 that I really don’t think is for the best. A twist that I saw coming but hoped didn’t happen.
I don’t think Samir and Billie should get together… yet
Let me be frank: I really do love this series. Adults is more realistic than any other friend-based sitcom, specifically because it feels more real. Yes, we'd all be living in our 'parents' basements and our houses, because who can afford any rent these days? It’s tough out here.
But I think a big reason why this series works so well is that romance really isn’t a huge part of it. Which is why I don't think this moment with Billie (Lucy Freyer) and Samir (Malik Elassal) is that great of an idea.
Yes, we’ve had romance in this series with Issa (Amita Rao), Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), and Anton (Owen Thiele), but it was never the main story of their lives. They all had their own stuff going on, and they just happened to be together or into each other. Only in the finale did we really see Anton and Paul Baker become a reality, because they wouldn’t own up to their feelings for ages.
And that was a great moment. After two seasons, I felt I could expect it because it had been hinted at enough. But watching Samir open the door at the very end to make sure no one was there, then open it further to see Billie, felt a little… off.
We know from the first season of Adults that Samir had a thing for Billie when they were younger and friends, but they’ve never really shown any real interest in each other as adults. If anything, they’ve tried to help each other get dates, succeed in their relationships, and more.
But when Samir’s girlfriend, Carly (Rachel Marsh), breaks up with him and Billie comforts him, I suppose that was at least a small hint. They were also having a bit of a party that night. However, when that door opened, they didn't seem inebriated at all. They seemed quite sure of what they were doing.
And I really don’t think that’s a great idea, because it doesn’t feel earned.
They can get together, just not next season
I think a one-night stand is fine, honestly. I think if this ended with them realizing it was a mistake and that Billie was a rebound after Carly broke up with Samir, we could recover. I think these two need a lot more time to build a connection and show they’re actually into each other.
There have to be those subtle moments where they feel like there’s this connection, but they’re in denial and all of that fun trope stuff—you know, the things we saw with Anton and Paul Baker in season 1. But right now it just feels like it's there to shock you.
And if for some reason they got together in a potential season 3, I don’t know how I would handle that. Because it doesn’t really feel like it should happen. For friends to really step over that boundary, especially long-time friends like them, there really need to be certain steps involved. Right now, it feels like they just leaped into it.
While the viewership for season 2 was much higher than season 1, and it does feel encouraging for the story to continue, we’re still waiting on a confirmed renewal of season 3. For now, I’ll wait and relax, hoping this twist untwists itself if the show returns for another season. And maybe we’ll see a really good slow burn eventually.
