By Josh Hill
The first season of the hit HBO series True Detective was marred by allegations of plagiarism which are aimed at Nic Pizzolatto but are sweeping in director Cary Fukunaga by association alone.

This is a really lame thing to do, as the director is clear of the writing of the show and dserves credit for his Emmy winning work and not the possible and unconfirmed mistakes of who he worked with.
In an interview with the Boston Herald, Fukunaga states that he’s not sweating the plagiarism allegations and talked about the way Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson handled things.
"Addressing the show’s recent plagiarism controversy — and McConaughey and Harrelson’s playful response during the telecast — Fukunaga said, “I think they treated it just right. You have to make fun of it, you can’t take that seriously.”"
The claims may or may not be baseless and they may have some groundings in reality but the bottom line is that the first season is a totally original work from Fukunaga’s stand point and hammer away at the plagiarism accusations is a slight against Fukunaga that is unwarranted.
