Matthew McConaughey Says No Scripts Can Live Up To True Detective
By Josh Hill
Matthew McConaughey nearly won an Emmy Award for his role on True Detective, but he’s not jumping into any new detective roles thanks to how moved he was by his work on the HBO show.
After his success on True Detective, Matthew McConaughey could have very easily packed it in and rode out that role in various derivative forms for the rest of his career. Instead, he’s continuing to rebuild himself as a serious actor and his role in the upcoming Christopher Nolan film Interstellar is proof of that.

What else is proof is the fact that McConaughey was so moved by True Detective that he’s refusing other scripts that put him in the role of a cop or detective.
In an interview with GQ, Matthew McConaughey noted that a lot of detective and police films have been tossed his way but none of the scripts he’s read have been on the level of True Detective.
"“I’ve seen a lot of detective scripts since then, but none of them could wear the jockstrap of Rusty Cohle.”"
McConaughey deserves a lot of credit for getting behind True Detective from long before the start. He was one of the driving forces behind everyone being into the show and his early commitment to the series is a testament to the fact that he’s able to choose good roles.
Thanks to not only True Detective but things like Dallas Buyers Club and Mud, we’ve seen that the McConaughey of the 2000s was a fluke and that there is real creative talent and the ability to scope it out inside of McConaughey.
