True Detective is nearing production on its second season, but the first season performance of Matthew McConaughey is still being talked about almost a year later.

Matthew McConaaughey nearly won an Emmy to add to his Oscar this past year but his role on True Detective just wasn’t good enough to beat out Bryan Cranston as Walter White. But just because he didn’t take home the Emmy doesn’t mean the role for McConaughey isn’t worth talking about almost a year after we first saw it.

Rust Cohle was a career defining role for McConaughey and it’s something that has stuck in pop culture ever since we first saw it. Part of what makes the role so memorable is the fact that the character was so deep in such a confusing way. Despite the weird babble that Rust went on, there is one person in the world who understood it all — Matthew McConaughey.

In an interview with GQ, McConaughey noted that at first he couldn’t for the life of him figure out what

"“I spent many, many, many, many, many, many hours, if not days, writing to Nic Pizzolatto and asking, ‘What are you saying here? What does this mean? Why is he saying it now?'” McConaughey said. “And then I was able to take it and make it my own.”"

There’s a chance that McConaughey didn’t get everything that was said and in fact was just so deep into the role he’d buy into anything, but it’s nice to know that the character is still with him. Someone had to understand where Rust was coming from the whole time and based on his performance, that person was always Matthew McConauhgey.
