Cary Fukunaga Helps Kick Off Austin Film Festival

Cary Fukunaga made a name for himself with True Detective and he has returned to the place where his career started in symbolic fashion.

The first season of the hit HBO series True Detective resulted in an Emmy Award for director Cary Fukunaga, and he is returning back to where his career started to help kick off the Austin Film Festival.

Fukunaga didn’t have a film premiere at the Austin Film Festival, rather his career started by simply attending the event when he was at NYU. It’s an experience that the director still clearly holds dear to his heart, and it’s something that has brought him back for the festival this year.

According to Time Warner Cable News, Fukunaga opened up the Austin Film Festival which was symbolic of his career.

"“Austin Film Festival was actually one of the first film festival’s I ever went to with my own film, ‘Kofi’ my first semester project at NYU and so I met a lot of really cool filmmakers on that trip and it was actually my first sort of festival experience as a director.”"

Festivals are so crucially important to anyone who wants to be a director — or in film in general — and it’s something that Fukunaga still sees as something that helped him. He’s an Emmy winner now with an A-list career ahead of him, but he’s never afraid to go back to where it all started.
