Could True Detective and Fargo Air at the Same Time?
The rivalry between new drama series’ Fargo and True Detective was part of what made this past Emmy season so controversial. True Detective, being submitted as a Drama, avoided going head-to-head with Fargo in the Miniseries category. Some thought that this was a cowardly act, as Fargo was one of the favorites going in.
Of course, True Detective ending up losing to Breaking Bad anyway, so the point is fairly moot. Both Fargo and True Detective garnered rave reviews, both are anthology series, and both are set to return in 2015. After last season, show runner Noah Hawley was quick to the draw with details about season two, outlining prequel scenario featuring new characters.
It was a bold move that brought Fargo out front and center, whereas at that point it’s possible that creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto only had a more general idea of where he wanted season two of True Detective to go. Consider it one of the perks of having a more traditional writing team, unlike True Detective which only has Pizzolatto as scribe.

For their first go around, Fargo and True Detective were only on television for a short amount of time. For season two, however, this could change. True Detective is still supposedly on track for a January premiere, and Fargo’s premiere hasn’t been announced yet. Even if they don’t premiere in the same month, they could still go head-to-head if Fargo premiere in, say, February.
If the two end up airing at the same time you can expect an almost endless comparison to begin. Fargo will have the definite edge as it will feature events that were previously mentioned in season one, and so there is already a hook for those that tuned in previously. True Detective has no such hook, which is both a strength and a weakness.
Regardless of what happens, it can’t be denied that the quality of dramatic television that we currently have is almost astounding. Do you plan on watching both if the air at the same time? What if they conflict?
These are the questions, people.
