Report: True Detective Nominated for a SAG award!
True Detective hasn’t exactly been sweeping the year-end critics list so far, and gone toe-to-toe with Hannibal on several of them. So it comes as good news to find out that True Detective has been nominated for a SAG award. Hopefully this can make up for True Detective’s Emmy showing, which had the series loosing out to Breaking Bad and Matthew McConaughey losing to Bryan Cranston.
True Detective is officially up for two SAG awards in the same category: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. As you may have already guessed, this unfortunately pits Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey against each other. On one hand it’s fair since neither actor plays a supporting role, but it does mean that a very difficult decision may have to be made.

Other actors in that category include Steve Buscemi, Peter Dinklage, and Kevin Spacey. It’s not too much of a leap to say that the toughest competition is most likely going to come from Peter Dinklage.
Hannibal, a series that True Detective has come up against several times so far on 2014 year-end lists, was not nominated. Billy Bob Thorton was nominated for his role on Fargo, but in a separate category so once again Fargo and True Detective won’t be directly competing.
True Detective’s chances at the SAG awards this year are fairly high, but it’s a double-edged sword that Harrelson and McConaughey have to go up against each other. Both actors gave great performances in True Detective, but it goes without saying that McConaughey has the critical edge.
If you had to choose between the two, who do you think deserves the win? The 21st Annual SAG Awards will take place on January 25th.
