True Detective Season Two: Three Things we Don’t Know

True Detective’s second is finally taking shape, even if it’s still adding cast members at an alarming rate. Take Rick Springfield, for example, who recently let it spill on Twitter that he was currently filming on True Detectives season two.

Spingfrield’s role in True Detective isn’t one of the unknowns that we’ll be examining, sorry to dash your hopes.

Instead, we’ll be taking a look at three very important aspects of True Detective that have yet to be revealed. Casting has been getting a lot of attention lately, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve forgotten about these other pieces to the puzzle.

3. The Other Directors

The above image is that of director Justin Lin. It was easy to choose an image for this first unknown because he’s the only director that’s actually been confirmed. Lin has been confirmed to be directing at least the first two episodes of True Detective’s second season, but everything beyond that is a mystery.

Considering that True Detective is currently in the middle of production, the other directors must have been chosen by now. True Detective season two was originally going to have a rotating cast of directors, and although there is no reason to believe that has changed, the number of directors involved may have been overestimated.

Season two of True Detective is set to have eight episodes, and at least two will be helmed by the same director. At that rate you only need three or four to split the work. Regardless, it’s one that we don’t know and are very curious about.

2. The Music

Much has been said about the music of True Detective. The music of True Detective’s first season acts as its own character, much in the way the setting does. This is all thanks to T. Bone Burnett, but there still hasn’t been an official release of the soundtrack even though it’s been very well received.

Burnett also hasn’t been confirmed to be returning to season two. If the characters, setting, time, and director are all changing, it does make sense that the man behind the music would change as well. Burnett is known for his bluesy style, a sort of style that went hand-in-hand with the first season’s Louisiana setting.

If nothing else, we’ve learned time and time again that there is no part of True Detective that is static. That may or may not include the music, and unfortunately we’re just going to have to wait until HBO is good and ready to let know what the deal is.

1. The Release Date

This is the big one, the white whale. We’ve been talking about True Detective’s second season premiere date for just about as long as the first one has been off the air. That’s because HBO has been inconsistent in its information, which pointed us to both “Spring 2015” and this upcoming January.

The puzzle still hasn’t been pieced together. We’re creeping up on January now with no confirmation that season two will actually premiere that month. At this point, accounting for time for promotion and to wrap filming, it’s looking very unlikely.

Either HBO has a date and isn’t ready to let the world know about it, or, even worse, they themselves don’t know. True Detective has proved to be a fairly unique project so far for HBO, from everything to the actual series to its production. This leads to a certain amount of unpredictability.

These are our top three parts of True Detective that we don’t know, but are desperate two. What are yours?
