True Detective Inspires It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Much like True Detective, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a much-loved series without the awards to back it up. And that’s pretty much where the similarities end. But that didn’t stop the FXX comedy from taking inspiration from True Detective in tonight’s upcoming episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The episode in question, “Charlie Work,” will air tonight on FXX. It will apparently feature a seven minute single-camera tracking shot inspired by Matthew McConaughey’s now infamous getaway as Rust Cohle in the True Detective episode “Who Goes There.”

“Who Goes There,” by the way, has become one of the most lauded episodes of True Detective’s first season even if Matthew McConaughey was unable to take home any awards for his performance.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Glenn Howerton — Dennis on the show and also executive producer — stated that the team were “pretty inspired by the bravado of “True Detective.”
Howerton also had a guest spot in the first season of FX’s Fargo as the air-headed gym instructor, Don Chumph. Now all he has to do is make an appearance on NBC’s Hannibal and he will have hit up possibly the three greatest under appreciated series on television.
There have been an endless amount of True Detective spoofs and tributes, but there hasn’t been very many tributes quite like this one. Once the episode airs we’ll take a more in-depth look at it. We encourage any fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and True Detective to tune in to tonight’s episode.
We happen to be fans of both, so the decision to watch wasn’t exactly a difficult one to make.
