Is it Right to Expect Another Matthew McConaughey from True Detective?

The first season of True Detective helped get Matthew McConaughey back on the map. Even though the “McConaissance” didn’t exactly begin with True Detective, it wouldn’t be right to say that the series didn’t have anything to do with it.

True Detective helped get Matthew McConaughey widespread acclaim for his dramatic acting, even if that didn’t translate into award wins. It’s also become difficult to separate his Lincoln commercial campaign from his True Detective character, Rust Cohle.

It it okay to be expecting all this from another actor?

In a recent interview with Vince Vaughn he was asked if now is the time of the “Vaughnaissance.” Vaughn didn’t take to the idea, going on to state that he is uncomfortable with labels. Right now Vince Vaughn is the “wildcard” of True Detective’s second season; a man not exactly known for his dramatic acting skills thrown into a very dramatic situation.

Matthew McConaughey helped put True Detective on the map and it’s unfair to ask the same of another actor, Vince Vaughn or otherwise. Even if the new leads blow it out of the water it shouldn’t be expected this early on for them to receive a similar sort of career revitalization.

And having that sort of pressure in interviews before the series has even aired creates a bad precedent.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see the same amount of fan-tributes for True Detective’s second season characters as we’ve seen for Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle. There will never be another character like Rust Cohle. We shouldn’t expect one, nor should we expect the actors to perform to our own unreasonable standards
