Check Out this Meaty Vince Vaughn Interview with Variety

Vince Vaughn has been popping up a lot lately. That tends to happen when you go on a press tour for your latest film, even if said film happens to be a complete bomb. In Vince Vaughn’s substantial press tour the topic of True Detective has managed to come up multiple times already, even though we haven’t learned anything substantial since the Playboy interview.

While that hasn’t necessarily changed with this new Variety piece, it is the most well-rounded interview that Vince Vaughn has participated in so far. The Variety feature functions as an overview of Vince Vaughn’s career thus far as well as where it might be headed.

The most interesting bits don’t come from Vaughn himself, but from quotes from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto:

"I always thought Vince was a great actor, from when he first broke in…I remember these independent dramas he was just great in. In his maturity I think he wears his history in a rugged, old-school manner. I see echoes of Robert Mitchum and James Garner in the kind of figure he cuts…”"

That’s high praise, indeed. Of course, Vince Vaughn is not known for the same dramatic acting as those actors, but it’s obvious that Nic Pizzolatto sees a serious potential in Vaughn. Just to compare how times have changed, Vaughn tells a short anecdote from filming Old School:

"“So when Todd Phillips wanted me for ‘Old School,’ the studio didn’t want me…They didn’t think I could do comedy! They said, ‘He’s a dramatic actor from smaller films.’”"

It’s difficult to think of Vince Vaughn in that context, but there you go. True Detective offers Vaughn a real chance to return to his dramatic roots and prove his range to a generation that grew up on films like Old School.
