True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga Picks up yet Another Directing Gig
Cary Fukunaga’s direction brought life to True Detective’s first season, but he’s since moved on. Fukunaga is now only attached to True Detective in the capacity of an Executive Producer, leaving the direction up to others. But that doesn’t mean he’s been taking it easy, oh no. Fukunaga has been insanely busy since True Detective ended.

And that doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. Indie Wire is reporting that Cary Fukunaga will be taking on an untitled drama from the writers of Brokeback Mountain. Much like Brokeback Mountain, the film will tackle homosexuality but this time based on true events.
"“The project is based upon the true story of Oregonian father-and-son Joe and Jadin Bell. Jadin, a fifteen-year-old openly gay sophomore, took his own life after being both bullied at high school and struggling for acceptance from the people closest to him.”"
The father, Joe, then embarks on a walk across America to enlighten people on prejudice. It’s set to be a moving story. Fukunaga’s filmography is filled with achingly relatable, human stories such as Beasts of no Nation, and horror such as True Detective and his re-make of Stephen King’s IT. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
Fukunaga’s name seems to pop-up every other week or so. The man is definitely making a serious name for himself. He recently participated in Tribeca Talks at the Tribeca Film Festival and gave some updates on his other projects and what it was like to work on True Detective.
Cary Fukunaga will also be adapting the best-selling novel The Alienist for television, returning to the serial-killer genre. We’re going to be seeing Fukunaga’s name a lot in the next couple of years, and perhaps even beyond if this level of momentum continues.
And we have absolutely no problem with that.
Next: Have we seen the last of a small-town True Detective?
