True Detective Director Cary Fukunaga’s The Alienist Coming to TNT
It is the time of the year for television network upfront. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, it’s the time when network execs present their plans for upcoming seasons. That means two things: new shows are coming, and your favorite show may have been canceled.

But for fans of True Detective, and more specifically True Detective’s first season director Cary Fukunaga, good news came out of the TBS/TNT upfront earlier today.
We previously reported that Cary Fukunaga would be helming an adaptation of The Alienist, but at that time there weren’t really any details. But now Deadline is reporting that TNT announced at their upfront that The Alienist will be coming to their network as an “event series.”
The term “event series” is something that we’re seeing more and more. Basically what it means is that they’ll aiming for a complete stories in less time than a full season, or even a half-season. Not unlike True Detective, actually. The Alienist will come to TNT with eight episodes.
TNT snatching up a dark, Cary Fukunaga series is a bit of a surprise. We would have thought that a premium channel, perhaps even HBO, would grab it. But Deadline says that TNT bought it beat out competitors by offering a straight to series order and a guaranteed budget. That’s a pretty strong deal.
More Cary Fukunaga on TV is always welcome, but the guy certainly does have a lot on his plate. True Detective’s second season, for which Cary Fukunaga is only an Executive Producer, will premiere on June 21st.
Next: T. Bone Burnett is involved with True Detective season two.
