True Detective Season Two Lead Colin Farrell Interviewed in Glamour

The veil on True Detective is finally being pulled aside. We’ve gotten teases, trailers, and just recently a new series of interviews. Rachel McAdams and Abigail Spencer have both sat down for interviews in which True Detective came up, and now we have a new one featuring Colin Farrell.

Colin Farrell isn’t a stranger to interviews since beginning work on True Detective, but this one with Glamour contains the most True Detective information. Which is still not very much, mind you.

The only frustrating aspect of this round of interviews is that the actors still aren’t allowed to truly talk about True Detective in any detail. The best interviews will only come after the second season has aired.

We’ve seen a piece of this interview before, but Glamour has now seen fit to publish the entire thing online.

Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not welcome. Especially when you get to read Colin Farrell talk about the pitfalls of True Detective casting:

"“The first season was so well received, it almost has a cult following already. Everyone…has an opinion on how the show should be cast. I’m well aware of that, but you’ve got to step away from it, otherwise you fall down the rabbit hole.”"

True Detective casting has been a hot-button issue since the first season, and will continue to be one as long as True Detective casts A-list stars. It must be difficult to approach the series knowing that. It would also appear that Farrell was a fan of the first season and knows that it’s not really about the case:

"“if you watched the first season, you’ll know that True Detective is so much more than a ‘whodunnit’. “That’s the great thing about the show. By episode three, you don’t give a…who killed who. It’s just a hook, a canvas, for everything else.”"

It’s a little difficult to agree with that point, at least in terms of the first season. Colin Farrell’s enthusiasm for True Detective is obvious, but the first season was definitely hampered by an un-fulfilling mystery. In theory, True Detective isn’t about the mystery — it’s about the characters. Hopefully that will work out better in season two.

To wrap up the True Detective portion of the piece, Colin Farrell spoke a bit about True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto:

"“I sat down with the writer-creator, Nic Pizzolatto, and we spoke for, like, five hours – he’s an extraordinary writer, he’s incredible at what he does.”"

That level of excitement and appreciation for the material jives with what we’ve seen in past interviews. All the actors involved with season two of True Detective seem to be very excited to be a part of it, and that’s great to see.

As of today, we’re exactly one month away from True Detective‘s season two premiere.
