Is Season Two of True Detective Really Going to be Less Dark than the First?
A few months back, before True Detective’s second season really got off the ground, word on the street was that it wasn’t going to have the same darkness. Now that two trailers have come out for True Detective season two, that doesn’t seem all that likely.

The initial word came from none other than HBO head, Michael Lombardo last September. While he did end up conceding that it was still plenty dark, he did stick with “it’s not as dark.” We’ve seen True Detective season two in action through two trailers so far, and it’s tough to say that it doesn’t look as dark as the first season.
That quote came out back in True Detective’s season two early days, a time when the script may have actually been a bit different. But Lombardo could also have been commenting on a lack of supernatural elements when compared to the first season, something which was confirmed by Nic Pizzolatto himself recently.
It was likely a combination of the two. True Detective’s second season won’t be featuring the same, cult-like killings that the first season had and there will presumably be no allusions or references to supernatural literature.
True Detective will always be a dark, serious drama. At that level it barely even matters which season will be objectively darker than another. It’s dark, and really that’s all that matters. Even if True Detective season two has a somewhat lighter tone in the end, it will still be a brooding look at humanity.
