True Detective Misses out on Critics Choice Awards

True Detective  not taking home an award is barely news at this point. The first season of True Detective was widely nominated but almost universally ignored during award season, even though it did manage to bring in some smaller guild awards.

Oh, and let’s not forget to mention that it recently took home a BAFTA.

The Critic’s Choice Awards were last night, and HBO took home a number of wins. HBO nabbed awards for Silicon Valley, Olive Kitteridge, and Nightingale. An impressive spread, to be sure. Other notable wins included The Americans and Better Call Saul.

For the most part, True Detective has been almost allergic to winning awards. The second season may be able to fix all that. True Detective season two won’t be eligible for the 2015 Emmy’s due to its summer premiere, so it may have to work a little harder to stay relevant.

If True Detective season two can fix some of the problems of the first season, including a weak ending and disappointing mystery, it should take the award shows by storm. The way that the trailers are presenting True Detective so far appear to point in a direction; emphasizing the characters over plot.

That may not sound great on paper, but it could be enough to turn True Detective into the series that consistently wins instead of the series that is consistently nominated.

Next: Vince Vaughn will grace the cover of British GQ.
