Colin Farrell Joining that New Harry Potter Spinoff
True Detective has been known to do interesting things to an actor’s career. Matthew McConaughey experienced a huge surge post-True Detective, and both Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn will be moving deeper into dramatic territory. Colin Farrell, however, will continue to do Colin Farrell-y films, more or less.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell will be joining the first Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This isn’t one of those announcements in which we have almost no details — we actually know quite a bit. Farrell will be playing Graves (how mysterious) a wizard encountered by the main character. Eddy Redmayne will be playing the lead.
The film will be releasing in November of 2016, so it’s still a bit over a year away. The role isn’t exactly out of Colin Farrell’s wheelhouse; he’s had plenty of interesting role over the years, including Fright Night, Seven Psychopaths, and the difficult to watch Alexander. So there you go. Soon we’ll all get to Farrell try his best to be a believable wizard.
Still, it’s a far-cry from his current role as Ray Velcoro in True Detective season two. It would appear that Farrell doesn’t quite wish to turn his career in a different direction after True Detective, but maybe he’ll be a little pickier in his chosen roles from now on.
Next: Rick Springfield on Dr. Pitlor.
