Watch a Trailer for Woody Harrelson’s New Thriller, “Triple 9” (Video)
All eyes have been on Matthew McConaughey since the first season of True Detective ended. That doesn’t mean, however, that Woody Harrelson hasn’t been up to interesting things as well. He’ll be playing Lyndon B. Johnson in LBJ, as well as reprising his role as Haymitch Abernathy in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingly Part 2.

This new film, more than the others above, captures some of that True Detective vibe. Triple 9 is a 2016 thriller from John Hillcoat and will star Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, and The Walking Dead’s Norman Reeds. The synopsis reads something like a typical cop thriller; crooked cops and gang members plan to off a police officer to make a score. That’s the gist, but it’s all in the execution.
You’d be forgiven to not recognizing the name of John Hillcoat as he hasn’t made a huge splash in America just yet, but his past films have been gritty, darkly stylish yarns that deserve more attention than they’ve gotten. Hillcoat is responsible for both the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and The Proposition, which was written by Nick Cave.
Although the plot of Triple 9 may seem pedestrian thriller stuff on paper, it’s the trailer that makes it shine. Woody Harrelson looks and feels like a True Detective creation, and it all comes together in splendidly dark fashion. If you’re a fan of action thrillers, this could end up being a must-see. Triple 9 won’t release until next year, so there’s plenty of time to build up the hype.
