True Detective’s Colin Farrell Role in Fantastic Beasts Revealed
“The moustache chooses the man, Ray,” or so Mr. Ollivander might have said were he a character in True Detective. That’s right, Vinci’s very own Ray Velcoro (more commonly known as his alter ego Colin Farrell) has been cast in the feature-length film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. That’s not exactly new information, but now we know what role he’ll be playing.

The news comes to us via Entertainment Weekly. The film, penned by none other than J.K. Rowling, follows young English wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) on his adventures in New York during the roaring twenties. Little is known about Newt Scamander, other than the fact that he carries with him a very special case. In typical Doctor Who fashion, the case is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, and holds “expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures.”

In the film, Farrell plays, “a powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world’s president.” It sounds like things are less than progressive for the magical world at this time. The American wizarding community is in hiding from a fanatical group called the Second Salemers, a nod to the Salem witch trials that occurred in Massachusetts in 1692. This group is lead by Mary Lou (Samantha Morton) and her “troubled adopted son” Credence (Ezra Miller), who are out to expose the wizarding world and end their magical ways.
Numbering only forty-two pages in length, Fantastic Beasts presents a catalog of the magical creatures found in the Harry Potter universe. A work of “magizoology,” the study of magical creatures, the book even features a sticker that reads “property of Harry Potter.” That’s right, you (and about half a million other people) can own Harry’s own personal copy of the book! Truly, we live in a magical world.
