Killing Fields Goes Hard for True Detective
Discovery’s new true crime series is gunning for the True Detective crowd.
True Detective is currently in its off-season and is expected to remain there for a while yet. That makes it the perfect time for any True Detective-esque shows to, at least temporarily, take up the mantle. Enter Discovery’s new series, Killing Fields, which is attempting to capture a chunk of the True Detective audience. At least those that enjoyed season one, anyway.

The major difference between True Detective and Killing Fields, however, is that Discovery’s new series follows an actual unsolved crime. This crime just happened to have taken place in Louisiana, where the first season of True Detective takes place. Take a look at clip:

The trailer even cops True Detective’s opening credits. Minus the addition of an actual crime and the fact at it follows real people, it’s an unapologetic True Detective clone. Maybe Discovery is hoping the those that are sorely missing the first season will give it a try. The way that Killing Fields unabashedly guns for True Detective is almost admirable.
There’s also a bit of Netflix’s Making a Murderer and HBO’s The Jinx in there as well, two other true crime series that have had some level of success. It’s a genre of reality television that is blowing up right now, and it wouldn’t be out of line to suggest that it’s at least partially due to True Detective.

For those that are curious, morbidly or otherwise, Killing Fields will begin tonight on Discovery.
