It’s Free State of Jones that specifically landed Matthew McConaughey on the cover of Garden & Gun. Unfortunately not a word is said about True Detective, which at this point makes sense; in terms of the McConaissance, True Detective was a long time ago. Instead, McConaughey talks about what attracted him to Free Sate of Jones in the first place:
"“I’m not much of a Civil War buff. I’ve always thought that when the Civil War is put on film, it’s not very dynamic. But in Free State of Jones, the action is killer. At the same time, it’s an incredibly intimate story about a real revolutionary at that time, Newt Knight.”"

The action of Free State of Jones is impossible to ignore. It is, above all else, a Civil War action movie. The interview touches on many points of Matthew McConaughey’s life, including his Southern roots and what he does in his leisure time. He also talks about the turning point in his career, and gives an interesting answer when asked if it was something he was actively seeking:
"“I was conscious of it to a degree. When you’re growing up, you make choices not necessarily by what you want to do, but by eliminating what you don’t want to do. And then you grow up, you mature, and you become aware of what you want. You choose those things and you go after those things, whether it’s a woman, a job, you name it. The career change goes back to the process of elimination.”"

That’s almost a perfect McConaughey sort of answer. You can head over to Garden & Gun to read the entire interview, which has a preoccupation with the South. If that’s your thing.
