Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of no Nation is Being Shunned by Award Shows

Cary Fukunaga’s harrowing Beasts of no Nation is being shunned by almost all of the award shows.

Back when Cary Fukunaga was doing a press tour for his new Netflix film, Beats of no Nation, it felt like it would be a shoe-in for the Oscars. That proved to not be the case when, last week, Beasts of no Nation was absolutely nowhere to be found on the Oscar nominee list. Not a single nomination for Cary Fukunaga or anyone else who worked on the film.

It’s possible that, being a Netflix  production, there are some frustrating studio politics at play here. The old guard may not be ready to embrace films produced by streaming networks that have avoided the traditional studio system. Idris Elba was nominated for his role at the Golden Globes but lost.

What is currently happening to Cary Fukunaga and Beasts of no Nation is not entirely unlike the current state of True Detective. The big difference being that Beasts of no Nation has done very well critically, while True Detective season two hasn’t. But we know that there were performances in season two that deserve more than they have been getting.

There is no real hope left for accolades when it comes to True Detective season two, but hope at least remains for Cary Fukunaga and his team. The Independent Spirit Awards have welcomed Beasts of no Nation with open arms, granting it five nominations. It also has a show at the SAG Awards.

Next: David Morse doesn't have all that much to add to the True Detective conversation.

Hopefully Cary Fukunaga will have better luck than old gig has had.
