Idris Elba Won a SAG Last Night for Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of no Nation
Idris Elba took home gold for his role in Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of no Nation at the SAG Awards.
Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of no Nation, a film that has continued Fukunaga’s streak of critical darlings, hasn’t been doing all that well this award season. The Oscars have ignored it entirely and the Golden Globes only nominated it in a single category: Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.

That was for Idris Elba, and he lost.
It’s an interesting situation when a film or television series is critically adored but snubbed by awards. Fortunately for Cary Fukunaga, and to a greater extent Idris Elba, Beasts of no Nation was able to score a win last night for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Elba also won for Luther last night, a win that he has deserved for several years. Besides background studio politics, another reason for Beasts of no Nation being snubbed by Hollywood elite could be that it’s just not easily palatable, even by normal drama standards. A similar situation could have been said to have occurred with NBC’s Hannibal, a show that did very well critically but was continually snubbed by, well, almost everyone.
Hopefully it will go better for Cary Fukunaga and Beasts of no Nation at the Independent Spirit Awards — the only award show that has thrown Beasts some serious love. Regardless of what happens, Fukunaga also has The Alienist in the pipeline for USA.
Next: True Detective season three can be announced without being rushed.
Or he could just return to True Detective with Idris Elba in tow.
