Gloria attempts to learn more about her dead stepfather’s past in “The Law of Non-Contradiction.”

Like in last week’s episode of The Leftovers, Carrie Coon’s Fargo character, Gloria, will head on a trip relating to a work investigation that combines both her personal and professional lives in Wednesday’s episode of the FX series.

In The Leftovers, Coon’s Nora is on her way to Australia with the vague possibility that she’ll reunite with her departed family members, while Gloria will journey to California to learn more about her recently deceased stepfather as part of the investigation into his murder at the hands of a marijuana-smoking ex-con hired by his parole officer to steal a vintage stamp from his brother’s home.

At the end of the season 3 premiere, the “highest ranking local officer” of Eden Valley found a box hidden under the floorboards of her stepdad’s home after discovering his dead body. It contained several sci-fi novels penned by someone named Thaddeus Mobley, a photograph of a glamorous-looking woman and a newspaper clipping of the author receiving an award.

Gloria deduced that Thaddeus and Ennis were one in the same, leading her to travel out west for traces of his former life. Meanwhile, the investigation back in Minnesota seems to be making headway as seen in the episode 3 trailer for “The Law of Non-Contradiction,” where deputy officer Donny Mashman informs his boss that new prints have been found.

More from Fargo

The short synopsis for the episode reads:

"“Gloria revisits her stepfather’s past to try and find some answers.”"

During her journey, Gloria will also meet with the woman from the photograph, now a waitress, providing some of Ennis’ backstory in flashback scenes where Mobley is played by Thomas Mann (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl).

In a scene exclusively posted to Facebook, we also get a glimpse of the newly divorced mom going on what looks like a date with a character played by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney. Things soon take an awkward turn when he chastises her for not being on Facebook.

This continues the running theme of Gloria being weary of technology, following mishaps involving bad cell phone reception and not being recognized by automatic doors, plus her aversion to computers. It also goes along with Fargo creator Noah Hawley’s assertion that the third season will deal with the dangers of “selfie-culture” and our technologically obsessed society. We’ve already seen how using Google can lead to murder.
