A darker version of “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” Spinoff in the works for the CW

Since Riverdale debuted, there has been a lot of speculation whether an infamous blonde haired witch would be making an appearance.

While magic doesn’t exactly fit in the crime-ridden and maple syrup infested small town, that doesn’t mean it can’t make an appearance in the universe. The CW has had so much success through its “Arrowverse,” that the network seems to be embracing the idea of expanding its Archie Comics property by adding Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

On the small screen, Melissa Joan Hart is known for playing the comical version of the titular character on the series, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch. While that sitcom showed off the good-natured qualities of the character, The CW plans to take her through a different ride.

The new series will be an adaptation of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s (the showrunner of Riverdale) highly successful and dark take on the witch in his graphic novel, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Despite the departure from the typically light-hearted Archie stories, Aguirre-Sacasa has found success both with his gritty take on Riverdale or his writing throughout the Sabrina comics.

More from Show Snob

However, the news of a Sabrina: The Teenage Witch reboot won’t shock many fans of The CW show. It was largely teased last season that the character would be making a cameo, sadly, it turned out being a comic book read by FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich) in prison.

With the development of the show officially starting, it’s very likely that the network has already cast the young witch. Rumors circulated on social media that two different Disney Channel stars had been in discussion for the role after tweeting out a few pictures from the comics as well as discussing their avid love for Riverdale.

The two in question are Dove Cameron, who rose to fame in The Descendants, and Girl Meets World actress Sabrina Carpenter. With the new Sabrina The Teenage Witch series expected to debut sometime in the 2018-2019 season, it’s plausible that Archie fans might see that blonde bob sometime in the latter half of this upcoming Riverdale season.
