Watchmen TV Series Adds Female Director For Pilot
By Shawn Lealos
It was gigantic news for comic book fans when HBO announced they were bringing a Watchmen TV series to the small screen.
There has already been a movie made based on Watchmen — the most significant graphic novel ever written — and it was an excellent adaptation, but there is so much great stuff to mine, and a premium network like HBO is the best place since much of the Watchmen world is R-rated.

Now, to add to the excitement of the upcoming comic book based series, HBO has revealed some more significant news about the TV show’s pilot. While Zack Snyder directed the movie, Variety reports that Nicole Kassell will direct the Watchmen pilot episode, a huge move to bring a female talent on to helm the series.
A lot has been written about how Marvel has yet to have a female director for any of their movies, although that is changing with Captain Marvel. It was exasperated when Marvel fired Patty Jenkins from Thor: The Dark World, only to have her join DC and make the most successful movie in the DCEU with Wonder Woman.
Now, Nicole Kassell can add to the prestige and prove that a comic book movie, or in this case, an HBO series, can work great with a female behind the camera. Kassell is also very experienced and has a lot to bring to the Watchmen pilot. Kassell also directed multiple episodes of The Leftovers, as well as an episode of Vinyl, The Americans, Better Call Saul, and American Crime.

This is a massive signing for Watchmen. HBO ordered the pilot of the series in 2017, and Damon Lindelof (Lost) will write and produce the series.
