New Cloak & Dagger trailer draws parallels between its heroes

Freeform generally has a reputation for lower budget young adult shows, but Cloak & Dagger looks like it might be a standout hit for the network.

Produced by Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb and The Punisher‘s Jim Chory, there’s a unique feel to the series compared to the other offerings on the network. Even from the newest trailer, the focus is placed on the two titular leads who fit together despite their opposing sides. The special effects look sleek, the leads are most likely break-out stars, and it would appear as though Cloak & Dagger is going to be one of the most underrated Marvel TV series.

Marvel released an official synopsis earlier this year for the show, giving fans less familiar with the characters some insight as to what the series will be about.

"Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging."

Part of what stands out about the premise and the trailer is how these polar opposites are set on the same path.  It looks like the series will be changing their origin story as two runaways who meet and are experimented on with a new drug. Based on the parents playing a large part in the series, it seems more likely that they end up being teenagers reconnecting at a party seen in a previous clip for the series.

However, the trailer also alludes to a mysterious car accident where a young Tyrone pulls Tandy out of the water and the two children spend the night on the beach. Could their powers have developed then?

One thing is for sure, the Roxxon Energy Corporation will probably have something to do with the mysterious way the two become powered. The company’s sign can be seen in the closing moments of the official trailer, and it has largely been hinted at being evil throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Set up in Agents of SHIELD, the company was most recently seen in Iron Fist where the group helped Madame Gao smuggle drugs. It’s safe to say if someone got their hands on a new drug to test on kids, then they would be the first in line.

Cloak & Dagger doesn’t premiere on Freeform until June 7, but Marvel has been hard at work promoting the series. Based on the success of their other teen-oriented show, Runaways, the series has potential to be a summer hit.

If the show does well for the network, then Marvel will have made some serious headway in the competition against DC on the silver screen.
