Marvel looks like it has another television show success on their hands with Cloak and Dagger.

The Freeform series debuted early at SXSW to unanimous positive reactions from audience members. While many noted the show isn’t perfect, it does seem like a hit for a channel trying to reinvent itself.

Deadline reported that only part of the first episode was made available to screen, but everyone agreed the show is off to a good start. It carries a more mature tone similar to the other Marvel shows but unlike other Freeform series. Embracing storylines exploring addiction, police corruption, and family issues that will resonate with younger viewers.

However, many viewers cautioned avid comic book fans before tuning into Cloak and Dagger. The adaption takes a lot of creative liberties with the series similar to Hulu’s Runaways.

Most notably, the show takes place in New Orleans rather than New York City. The two will also have to deal with their parents and school work rather than simply run away. While comic book purists will undoubtedly be upset about the changes, some of these tweaks will help carry the story along throughout the season.

Like the Netflix series, Marvel has garnered a reputation for having a great soundtrack. Early reviews confirmed the music in Cloak and Dagger is phenomenal and helps engage the audience. Considering how important music is to New Orleans, it’s heartening to know the show treats it as such. Marvel has released vinyl soundtracks for all of their Netflix shows, and there’s a strong chance they do the same for Cloak and Dagger.

While some critics have stated the plot and special effects are “nothing new,” everyone agrees the two leads are fantastic. Disney Channel star Olivia Holt gets the opportunity to show off her acting chops as Tandy Bowen. Relative newcomer, Joseph Aubrey (The Night Of), is equally impressive in his first major role. Audience members at SXSW commented on the extremely natural chemistry between the two both off and on the screen which bodes well for the series.

Unfortunately, fans of Runaways should not expect a crossover anytime soon with Cloak and Dagger. The first season is expected to focus on the origin of the two main characters and their powers. Yet, Jeph Loeb confirmed if the show is renewed then there’s a chance for fans to see the teams work together in the future. For now, Cloak and Dagger will premiere on Freeform on June 7.
