Cloak & Dagger showrunner wants a crossover with Runaways

Cloak & Dagger hasn’t even debuted yet but showrunner, Joe Pokaski, is hoping for a crossover.

The two teenage heroes have a long history with Marvel’s other super-powered kids on Runaways. While fans were hoping the two shows might eventually crossover, recent comments make it one step closer to reality.

At WonderCon, Pokaski was quick to praise Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage for their work on the Hulu series. In fact, he apparently has already spoken to them about the possibility of a crossover.

"“I mean it was really important for the first season to really establish Tandy and Tyrone, even as people before they become superheroes… But I’m a big fan of what Josh [Schwartz] and Stephanie [Savage] did on The Runaways and we’re always talking about when do we get to do our crossover. There’s probably 400 lawyers in the way… I’m excited for however Cloak & Dagger can play in the universe.”"

Comic book fans will be ecstatic to hear that the brains behind the shows are interested in a team-up. Both Runaways and Cloak & Dagger have fought alongside each other or against one another in the comics.

Now that the kids are on the run, it’s possible for the two shows to recreate their first meeting. After being framed for murder, the kids are pursued by Tandy and Tyrone for crimes they didn’t commit. However, they manage to sort out their differences without any serious injuries and an alliance is formed.

Unfortunately, Pokaski did note that it would be a huge legal matter to try and develop a crossover. While both are produced by Marvel, his show is on Freeform while Runaways airs on Hulu.

From a production standpoint, the two series are filmed during different times which would prevent scheduling conflicts. Ultimately, it would be up to Marvel to try and convince the two networks to get along.

Runaways is the comic book giant’s first teenage based series that debuted to strong critical reviews last year. Cloak & Dagger has already garnered a lot of positive early buzz despite not airing until June.

Out of all the current Marvel series, these two are definitely the ones that make the most sense for a crossover. They appeal to the same demographic, will probably have similar tones, and deal with a lot of the same issues.

Marvel has long said their universe is all inclusive when it comes to their movies and television shows. Unfortunately, it hasn’t felt like that when connecting the two worlds. It definitely feels feasible for Runaways and Cloak & Dagger to crossover to help instill that unity.

Realistically, Marvel has become so big that if they work at it then this dream might come true. In the meantime, check out the new Freeform show on June 7.
