Geoff Johns steps down from DC Entertainment and inks new deal
Geoff Johns has stepped down from his post with DC Entertainment to return to his writing roots.
For a long time, Geoff Johns has been in charge of the creative direction for DC Entertainment. However, the esteemed comics writer has officially stepped down from his post and inked a new deal. In an exclusive contract, Johns will now be returning to his roots as a writer/producer for DC Comics and Warner Brothers.
Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that Johns will be creating Mad Ghost Productions. The company will be in charge of crafting comics, movies, and television shows for both Warner Brothers and DC. Fans of Johns’ writing will undoubtedly be happy to see him be more hands-on with their favorite superhero properties.

As for the decision to step down, Geoff Johns seems to have zero regrets. In a statement released today, he confirmed his choice was to return to his writing.
"“I took on a role at DCE because I love the characters and this universe more than anything. But, I want to spend my days writing and on set. I’m thrilled to get back to a more hands-on creative role. It’s a dream job on dream projects, reaching even deeper into DC’s vast pantheon of characters.”"
This move can already be seen to have an effect on DC Comics. Johns is one of the creators and producers to the upcoming Titans series, however, he’ll also be writing the pilot. He’s also been tasked with writing the pilot for the spin-off, Doom Patrol. Fans who have been worried about the quality of the two shows will certainly rest easy knowing Johns will be controlling the writing side.
He’ll also be doing work on the comic book side for DC. Geoff Johns is expected to write a new Shazam series as well as a return to a formerly sidelined project, Three Jokers.
To replace him, DC Entertainment publisher Jim Lee and Dan DiDio will take over as the Chief Creative Officers. Both of them had nothing but positive things to say about Johns and his recent exit.
"“Geoff is one of DC Comics’ most prolific writers, and we can’t wait to see what he does next now that he will be dedicating 100 percent of his time to telling the best DC stories possible across all media.”"
However, fans will probably be wondering how Johns’ departure will affect the movies and television shows. It seems like this move will allow him to have a stronger say in the direction of content because he’ll be writing it. Before, he had to stand by and allow others to tell a story while he handled the business end.
Will this have a positive effect on the future of DC Entertainment? It certainly seems like it, especially because of Geoff Johns’ prolific history as a great writer. Warner Brothers is just happy to keep someone as talented as Johns in their staff. Toby Emmerich, the Chairman of Warner Brothers Picture Group, released a statement about their excitement to continue the partnership.
"“Geoff is a super talented writer and truly embedded in the DC Universe and its characters. We’re thrilled that he’s returning to his passion and his roots as a writer and producer. And, it’s even better that he’s staying in our Warner Bros. family. We look forward to working with him on ‘Green Lantern’ and other projects going forward.”"
