Trial & Error season 2 finale recap: ‘A Big Break’ and ‘Barcelona’
Trial & Error might have tried its last case, but was it everything fans were hoping for?
Sadly NBC’s underrated comedy aired its season two finale which might end up working as a series finale. Trial & Error has a lot of questions to wrap up in this hour but will it offer a sense of closure for hopeful fans? I’m personally hoping for many more seasons to come but for now, let’s review these two episodes.
1. Carol-Anne Kean has an impressive amount of willpower.
In court, Carol-Anne is desperate to remain on the case. She has some typically ludicrous evidence to implicate Jesse Ray as per usual. However, she’s also in labor (?) which causes her to force her baby from coming out. Definitely not healthy but hey, she’s got a lot of willpower.

2. RIP Forge Clooney
Yes, the legendary Forge Clooney is found dead inside his ice cream freezer. Dwayne thinks it’s a possible suicide. Josh isn’t as convinced though, and rightfully so.
3. Anne’s daughter has a really creepy artistic talent
In this week’s Trial & Error Anne has a new condition which forces her to close her eyes. Her daughter draws eyes onto her eyelids so she makes people think her eyes are open. Unfortunately, it’s extremely creepy but it does keep Anne from getting murdered since Lavinia is only killing suspects.
4. The most painful death ever depicted on television

Mickey Moose met his end today and it destroys the town completely. He was Dwayne’s idol, and poor Josh is the only one wondering how this death hurts the town more than the actual human deaths. Sorry Josh, Dwayne is definitely in the right when it comes to grieving one of East Peck’s most beloved animals.
5. Lavinia is actually a psychopath with a beautiful voice
Yes, at Mickey Moose’s funeral she cheerfully tells Josh how she might have murdered Forge Clooney and the wonderful moose. Josh is rightfully terrified that his former client is a full-fledged psychopath but he realizes she’s getting rid of witnesses. As he quakes in terror, she hits the stage for a long solo celebrating Mickey Moose’s life.
6. “The first rule of bite club, is don’t talk about bite club”
Reverend Tats, or the local tattoo artist, was Chet’s confidante knows a bit more about the deceased Peck than anyone else. Jesse Ray reveals Chet was in “bite club” and he loved feeling pain. Namely tattoos, piercings, and even choking himself hence the rope marks. Luckily, Josh gets the proof Chet choked himself before Lavinia can murder Reverend Tats. Unfortunately, she does get him later on in the episode.
7. Dwayne’s the mole!

He finds the bug on his tie clip that Lavinia gave him and the team realizes why Lavinia keeps finding all their witnesses. Dwayne offers to try autoerotic asphyxiation to see how Chet might have gotten his ligature marks. It’s always funny to see Trial & Error let Dwayne try out his different theories while Anne happily cheers him on.
8. Nina/Josh/Carol-Anne
Things are definitely complicated between the three of them. Josh has feelings for Nina, which she reciprocates because “he irons” but Carol-Anne might be having his baby. When the latter’s voice lowers signifying the baby is officially coming, Josh rushes to the hospital with her. Not the best move for a guy trying to woo another woman.
9. Buried treasure
Josh correctly guess that the numbered tattoos on Chet’s back are actually GPS locations. They dig up another box and the team “strikes gold”. Turns out Lavinia might have murdered her brother to steal his gold inside the “big box”. Seriously, Dr. Rock n’ Law might have been a genius. Apparently, Lavinia thinks there is something else inside the box which clues the team into the fact that gold wasn’t what she was after.
10. Who’s the dad?

Carol-Anne still doesn’t know who the father of her daughter is. But she’s already smitten with her infant and so is Josh. Nina decides she’s leaving for Juarez, it’s safer now that everyone’s dying, and Josh admits he has feelings for Carol-Anne. Sadly, he finds out the little girl isn’t actually his but Rutger’s. It’s possibly one of the saddest scenes on Trial & Error because who wasn’t hoping that baby was Josh’s?
11. The wig that saved the day
Yes, it turns out someone else was arrested before Jesse Ray in the original case. That guy’s hair was found at the crime scene but he reveals he wasn’t “wearing it” at the time. Who was? Well, none other than Lavinia Peck-Foster. In fact, it looks very similar to her Ronnie Del Mundo disguise.
12. The box is more than a box
Turns out Chet’s box has a false bottom! Yes, they discover that inside the box are letters from Trig to his mother. It’s exactly what she values more than anything in the world. Josh uses this to trick her onto the stand where he can trap her. Yep, Lavinia gleefully admits to what she did on the stand but Josh manages to really get under her skin.
13. FULL ROBERT DURST
Lavinia admits “What did I do? I killed them all of course!” as Josh has Trig arrested for the murder of Chet. It’s the perfect ruse because he’s the only person Lavinia would give up everything for. Luckily, Trial & Error gives her one last song (and an encore) before getting shuffled off to jail
14. Did Josh accidentally set witches loose?
Yes, he hired a fake Trig or Dwayne’s brother-cousin to set up Lavinia to admit to murdering her family. But she revealed the Pecks were the one who got rid of the witches and now they might come back. He writes her off but never doubt East Peck.
15. Carol-Anne joins the team
She finally wins DA and is naturally excited. But she admits to Josh that she got almost everything she wanted. Their relationship is better than ever, and it’s easy to root for the two of them.
16. Lavinia is on the loose and so are the witches
She manages to escape for Barcelona at the end, leaving the possibility of a future appearance by Kristin Chenoweth. If Trial & Error returns, a man called in asking for Josh’s help freeing two boys during the East Peck Witches trial from way back when. This season has proven how ridiculously good and unique this show is so here’s hoping the fan campaign will earn it a renewal.
