The Walking Dead to focus heavily on Maggie before her exit
By Derek Johns
While a lot of the focus going into season 9 of The Walking Dead has towards Andrew Lincoln’s departure, fans and writers haven’t forgotten this will be a farewell season for Lauren Cohan as well.
According to director Greg Nicotero, the first six episodes of The Walking Dead will heavily focus on Maggie leading up to her departure saying “You know, we really wanted to focus, and concentrate on a great story for Maggie, knowing that she was going to head off and do this show.”
Maggie will apparently be taking a bigger focus during the first three episodes in particular thanks to some conflict that will be happening at the Hilltop.
This is a creative decision that both makes sense and isn’t all that surprising.

Maggie has been a fan favorite over the years and has one of the longest tenures on the show so it would only make sense it stands to reason they would make as much use out of her character as possible for the next six episodes they still have her.
Of course, it’s also worth noting that Maggie’s exit will reportedly be far more open-ended than most The Walking Dead characters are accustomed to and Cohan is open to returning to the show in the future.
Fair or not, AMC also took a great deal of flack for the way contract negotiations with Cohan were handled a few months ago, so they would also need to get as much good press surrounding the character as they can.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead will premiere on AMC October 7th.
