9-1-1 season 2, episode 14 recap: Broken

It’s lights out, Los Angeles in this thrilling episode of 9-1-1!

9-1-1 never fails to scare the crap out of us, and they do it once again on “Broken”. When the entire city of Los Angeles shuts down, our first responders and 9-1-1 center have to do things the old school way. This means busting out the walkie-talkies and using the OG maps (you know the ones I’m talking about).

I’ll start off with a pregnant woman named Sonia. Of course, she would go into labor just as the city descends into chaos. And while the team works their way to her, they take a wrong turn–literally. With no GPS or technology at their disposal, they’re given the incorrect address. Thanks to Maddie, they eventually find their way to the patient but don’t have enough time to take her to the hospital. Looks like the baby is being delivered on the spot!

A story that should have ended in happiness takes a dark turn when after delivering the baby, Sonia has complications and passes away. Just like that, she’s gone, and it’s absolutely soul-crushing to watch. But wait, this is 9-1-1 so things are always on the verge of shocking us. Sonia’s husband (who is just utterly useless) lays their baby on Sonia’s chest and somehow, she comes back to life. I’m not sure how crazy I am about this story, but eh, I’ll take it.

But moving along to the main storyline of the episode, a gas leak causes an entire neighborhood to go up in flames. Thanks to Chimney, who is at home on leave, the team is alerted to this disaster. When they arrive on the scene, they learn that a young boy is trapped in his house as the fire surrounds him.

Eddie comes to the rescue but isn’t quite able to finish the job. There’s no water to calm the flames down, so they’re pretty much SOL at this point.

But, no, wait! Chimney saves the day once again after asking a friend of his to fly over the neighborhood and release thousands of gallons of water. Chimney, you are the real MVP of 9-1-1.

This episode, however, focuses on more than just the insane stories. We got Bobby and Michael butting heads over Harry, who decides to be a hero like Bobby. He and his friend make a fire and then proceed to try and put it out, which pisses Michael off. Bobby is “corrupting” Harry and Michael is quick to point out that Bobby isn’t Harry’s father. Ouch.

I’m pretty sad about this because I’ve loved the relationship between Bobby, Michael, Athena, and the kids. They’re handling it so well, but this episode reminds us that things can’t always remain perfect. However, Michael shows up to say sorry to Bobby and the two come to terms with how they feel and then go right back to being the best of friends.

What breaks my heart the most about this episode of 9-1-1 is the whole Chimney/Maddie angle. They both almost died thanks to her ex-husband, and now they’re essentially avoiding dealing with it. It’s changed their relationship, but they’re choosing to ignore it–until they don’t. By the end of the episode, they decide to call it quits, at least for now. They have a lot to work through and it won’t happen overnight. Sigh, the woes of romance.
