Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is returning to Netflix, and this time, fans will be able to choose her adventure in an interactive special.

The yet-to-be-titled special will be created by and executive produced by the series’ original creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. In addition, the four core members of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt cast ‚— Ellie Kemper (Kimmy Schmidt), Tituss Burgess (Titus Andromedon), Jane Krakowski (Jacqueline White), and Carol Kane (Lillian Kaushtupper) — are set to reprise their roles.

The special will mark comedy’s first dip into interactive content on the streamer. Netflix made a splash when it released the interactive Black Mirror episode “Bandersnatch” in late 2018. That success has led the service to seek out more ways to incorporate new interactive stories into its programming. Its most recent foray in that direction was the survival reality show You vs. Wild starring Bear Grylls.

Fey was the first to share the news, saying:

More from Show Snob

"We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new Interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series."

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ended its four-season run on Netflix in January with a finale episode that wrapped up many of the character’s stories. The possibility of a wrap-up movie for the show had been teased since the announcement that season 4 would be the series’ last. Now it looks like, in lieu of a movie, the creators and stars of the series will experiment with the interactive storytelling format instead.

The series finale of Kimmy Schmidt didn’t require any continuation in the form of a wrap-up movie. However, an interactive special will offer another chance to spend time with these beloved characters while also offering audiences an experience, unlike anything they’ve had with the show before. Given the series features an ongoing narrative with familiar characters and the requirement that those characters be funny, the special sounds like it could be quite a challenge to create. If anyone can pull it off though, it’s Fey and Carlock.
