Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part 2, episode 8 recap: Chapter Nineteen: The Mandrake
By Ariba Bhuvad
Sabrina must face the reality of her increasing powers in the season two penultimate episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is getting crazier and crazier as we near the end of season two, and it’s safe to say that Sabrina has no idea what to do with the powers she’s suddenly displaying. Confused as to why Sabrina’s face is drawn in front of one the underground tunnels, she and Nick head to Ms. Wardwell to figure out what the hell is going on.
Meanwhile, Harvey is standing guard in front of the tunnel to make sure no one passes through it while telling Ros that he is head over heels in love with her. Of course, Sabrina has no idea that by visiting Ms. Wardwell she’s walking into a trap set by Lilith, who suggests that Sabrina rid herself of all her powers.
She can do this by casting a mandrake spell in which she’ll have to sleep next to a mandrake plant which will suck out all the powers from Sabrina and create a doppelgänger. Once Sabrina manages to kill it, all her powers will go away along with it. Easy enough, right?

With Ambrose watching over her, Sabrina falls into a deep sleep next to the mandrake. Unfortunately, when she wakes up, nothing feels different. All the while, Blackwood is making some major changes at the Academy and converting the Church to the Church of Judas. There’s not much Hilda or Zelda can do to stop all this from happening but they try nonetheless.
The situation gets worse when Prudence catches Zelda helping one of the students and outs her to Blackwood. It takes some time but Prudence finally realizes that her father has zero concern for her and only cares about himself. With this realization, Prudence lets Zelda go and decides to stay back and remain with her sisters.
Alright Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fans, remember how Sabrina was doing the mandrake spell? Well, it turns out that the mandrake played a trick on her and now her evil doppelgänger is out and about causing ruckus and mayhem. Meanwhile, the actual Sabrina learns the hard way that her powers are officially gone when Lilith’s scarecrow ends up attacking her.
We learn through Nick, however, that there is a prophecy about a girl that will do basically all the things Sabrina has done–with Wardwell/Lilith’s help. This leads them back to Wardwell as they confront and capture her, while the doppelgänger takes down the boys Blackwood sends to kill her and almost manages to take down Sabrina’s friends as well.
Eventually, the doppelgänger heads back to the funeral home where Sabrina shows up and has a duel of sorts with her carbon copy. She does this knowing that the mandrake/doppelgänger isn’t exactly smart or as intelligent as she is which makes it easy for Sabrina to kill it. And while it may seem like Sabrina has managed to come out on top, it’s actually anything but.
You see, she’s completed the last and final step of this whole ordeal–committing suicide. Unfortunately, Nick shows up a tad bit too late as things go dark and the Dark Lord officially arrives.
