The Widow season 1, episode 4 recap: Violet
By Wade Wainio
In episode 4 of Amazon Prime’s The Widow, Georgia gets closer to locating Pieter Belo, and also to danger. Also, Ariel wants to make himself useful.
This episode of The Widow partly hinges on a flashback to 5 years ago, when Georgia Wells (Kate Beckinsale) and Will (Matthew Le Nevez) were coping with the death of their child, Violet. During their struggle to move on, Will had written the letter “V” all over on pages, and Georgia made a suicide attempt (however, the main thing here is Will writing those “Vs”).
Also, The Widow adds significance to the character of Ariel (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), who is speaking with Martin Benson (Charles Dance) in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A former Army intelligence officer, Martin tracked Ariel down after he took money out of a bank account shortly after the plane crash in the Congo. Back then Ariel’s last name was Armason, but had it changed to avoid political intrigue. Martin tells Ariel that they’ve narrowed the search for the man who planted the plane’s bomb.
Ariel verifies the insignia on the man’s uniform, meaning a military man provided the bomb to Ivette (Robinah Kironde) — the wife of Emmanuel (Jacky Ido), who would later die in a car bomb intended for Georgia. Now Ariel, who was blinded from the plane crash, wishes to make amends for fleeing the truth and crafting a new identity. He aims to do so by identifying the bomb-planting general by voice.

Identifying Mr. Bello
As we saw previously on The Widow, Georgia’s on her way to Kisima looking for her husband, but she hit a few bumps in the road. Her medical team entourage was swarmed by militia men and Georgia ended up shooting one. When they do get to Kisima, Fabrice (Richard Lukunku) talks to Mai-Mai militia men, to clarify why they’re in the area. Meanwhile, Tom (Howard Charles) asks Georgia if she had ever killed anyone before. Georgia says she hadn’t, but was a former Army captain ane therefore trained for such a scenario. Of course, Georgia has bigger issues on her mind, such as the location of her missing (and presumably kidnapped) husband.
Suspecting that Pieter Bello (Bart Fouche) is involved, Georgia shows a photo of him to a local (Fabrice Luzimgamu) who reacts angrily. Meanwhile, Bello himself is shown training soldiers, with children among them. We see the young Adidja (Shalom Nyandiko) is one of those soldiers. Meanwhile, Georgia is threatened once more by the militia, though it’s apparently a case of mistaken identity.
Shortly after that, Hidaya (Sarah Muhoho) approaches Georgia, conveying that she recognizes Bello in the photograph as the man who killed her husband, Kalehe (Mavuso Simelane). Hidaya’s husband worked in Bello’s mining operation. Soon we see just how rough that can be, as there’s yet another round of gunfire against people in the mine pit. On the bright side, we see Adidja didn’t participate, whereas she was previously tasked with killing Kalehe by Bello himself.
Zeroing in on Bello
Although Tom offers to accompany Georgia into the jungle to find Will, she goes it alone. Before long, Adidja aims a gun at her, though. However, Georgia eases tensions by offering medical assistance to Sadiki (Lungile Radebe), who was injured in the mine gun battle. Meanwhile, as she’s removing bullet fragments, Georgia deduces that the militia men who accosted her earlier were actually looking for Louise (Mathilde Warnier), one of the aid workers. It also appears that Louise isn’t so nice, as she wants to leave Georgia behind! However, when Georgia gets back to Kisima, Louise confesses that she’s smuggled coltan out of the mine for Mr. Bello. This inspires Georgia to use Louise to find him.
The Widow reveals that Bello believes he’s running the mining operation now. Seemingly to appease him, Louise spills the beans about Georgia being out looking for him. However, it’s actually Georgia’s plan for Pieter to send some of his soldiers away from his camp to find her (reasonably smart planning, right?). Georgia then sneaks into Bello’s cabin, sees a room with “Vs” written all over and immediately knows Will had been there. Then, when the moment is right, she confronts Pieter at gunpoint about her missing husband. It’s definitely a big turning point for The Widow, and her quest for answers.
