Emmys: Where are Broad City’s Emmy nominations?
The Emmy nominations are out and there are some notable snubs, including the Comedy Central series Broad City.
Before you say it, yes, I know Broad City was technically nominated for three Emmy Awards. But also…were they really? Their three nominations all come for their online bonus shorts, “Hack Into Broad City.”
To be fair to “Hack,” it definitely deserves to be nominated for outstanding short form comedy and Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have earned their acting nominations for the shorts. That said, they also should have been nominated for their actual show. You know, the one that ran for five successful seasons on Comedy Central.
Glazer and Jacobson took their Broad City concept from YouTube shorts to a Comedy Central hit that spawned offers for future series from both of these incredible producers and comedians. But somehow Broad City was given a whopping zero (nada, zilch) Emmy nominations during its run.

I know it sounds like I’m kind of stumping for Broad City to have essentially gotten “lifetime achievement” respect nominations. And I am.
It’s not unusual for the Emmys to dole out nominations to the final season of great show as a sort of hat tip to the show’s legacy. (Depending on how you feel about Game of Thrones, there could be some questionable nominations that came out of its final season.)
I know the show wasn’t necessarily a ratings darling by the end of its run, but it’s been a critical hit since the beginning.
In fairness, the Emmys had an incredibly stacked field of actresses in the lead actress in a comedy series category—Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) and, of course, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep).
I can’t logically argue that any of those women don’t deserve their nomination.
And maybe that’s where the Emmys wound up—unable to justify putting Glazer or Jacobson in over six women who inarguably had fantastic seasons on bigger hit shows. So, we wind up with the “Hack Into Broad City” nominations.
It hurts. And it hurts to see Broad City ride off into the sunset without a single Emmy nomination for the actual show (and not just the shorts). But I, for one, will at least take solace in the fact that Jacobson and Glazer aren’t going anywhere. They’re already working on future projects.
Hopefully one of these future projects will bring them the main category Emmy nominations they deserve.
